Question 1
Background of the Chosen SME/SMME
The selected SME is Sunrise Bakery, a small enterprise located in
KwaMashu Township, Durban, KwaZulu-Natal. The bakery was
established in 2018 by Mrs. Thandeka Mkhize, a local
entrepreneur who identified the need for affordable, fresh bread and
traditional confectionery in her community. The business began as a
small home-based operation but quickly expanded into a formal
bakery with a storefront due to high demand and positive word-of-
mouth referrals.
Sunrise Bakery primarily provides freshly baked bread, scones,
muffins, vetkoek, and celebratory cakes that appeal to the tastes and
traditions of the surrounding community. The business prides itself
on producing baked goods that reflect cultural preferences, such as
incorporating traditional flavours like coconut, amasi (fermented
milk), and maize meal into its recipes. This approach not only
differentiates the bakery from larger retail chains but also
strengthens its cultural connection with African consumers in the
area.
Currently, the bakery employs seven staff members, including
bakers, shop assistants, and delivery personnel, most of whom are
recruited from within the KwaMashu community. This supports
local employment and fosters trust between the business and its
customers. The bakery also provides part-time opportunities to
young people during festive periods when demand for bread and
cakes is especially high.
