This document has a detailed report of a rat dissection. Biology grade 11 often requires you to complete a rat dissection as an assignment and this is the lab report for it.

Rat Dissection Lab Report

Rats which fall under the genus Rattus category are rodents that also belong to the Muridae

family. Rats are all over the world and are the most used as model organisms in any scientific experiments

and research because of the similarities it has with humans based on the anatomical and the physiological

features (Wikipedia contributors, 2025). Because rats are part of Class Mammalia, they have distinct

mammalian features and characteristics as humans do. Examples of these are hair, well - developed brain

to body ratio and even the teats. These characteristics and features help to study human biology as well as

contribute to medicine (Bryda, 2013).

COMPARISONS BETWEEN RATS & HUMANS

Humans and rats have many similarities whether it is psychologically or anatomically.

1. Rats and humans have very similar circulatory systems. They all include a 4 chambered heart, it

includes 2 atria and 2 ventricles, that smoothly pumps blood to the lungs and around the body.

This also includes the distribution of nutrients.

2. The reproductive organs of a rat are analogous to ones humans have, so this makes them even

more useful in terms of studying reproductive bio.

3. Humans and rats share very similar skeletal structures. This includes the ribs, the limb bones and

even the vertebrae. This contributes to the study of movement and any skeletal diseases. There

was also a look taken at the hind legs and located the ankles. The ankles move and feel very

similar to humans.

OBJECTIVES OF THIS LAB

The main objectives of this lab are these following points

1. To identify and observe any major organs part of the 3 organ systems looked at. Those systems

are the circulatory system, respiratory system, and digestive system.

, 2

2. Look at the differences and similarities between the anatomical structures of rats and humans.

3. This lab can help develop understanding of anatomy of mammalian systems through hands - on

research of the rat.

WHY ARE RATS USED TO STUDY HUMAN ANATOMY

Rats are usually used to study the human body because rats and humans are both rats and they

share a significant amount of similarities. The smaller size of the rat makes it easier to access its organs

and everything else that may need to be researched rather than doing it on a bigger scaled mammal (Kent

Scientific, n.d.). In addition, the logistical and ethical challenges that we face for using humans as subjects

for a much more detailed look at the anatomical view which gets around by using rats. Rats still provide

for us a very interesting and researchful look at human anatomy and overall biology. Rats have a much

more simple and easily accessible anatomy (Bryda, 2013). This means the structures and organs we want

to access are much easier to find and look at which make them an amazing tool to understand human

anatomy and even general mammalian anatomy.

OBSERVATIONS MADE DURING THE DISSECTION

This dissection showed many different important characteristics and features of the rat’s organs

and its systems. An example is that the lungs and heart of the rat is located in the thoracic cavity, this is

very similar to where those organs are located in humans. In the abdominal cavity the liver was the most

prominent organ. Akin to the human lover the liver has many functions like helping out metabolism and

any detoxification that needs to take place, all of it takes place in the liver. Now, the digestive system

starts from the esophagus, into the intestines and along all of that there is an efficient pathway for the food

to be processed. This really portrayed the same as the human digestive system. Although one thing that

really stuck out was the caecum in the rat. It was very large compared to the one in humans which showed

that the reason for this was their diet. Rats are herbivores and the plants they eat require a much longer

period of fermentation of the material that is there.
