, Case Study 1
Approach:
I would immediately contact the hospital social worker to get a detailed report on the infant's
condition and the mother's mental and emotional state. My primary and urgent action would be
to go to the hospital to assess the situation directly. Upon arrival, I would liaise with the medical
team for a full medical report on the infant. I'd then conduct an initial interview with the mother,
a 16-year-old minor, to understand the circumstances that led to the poisoning. I would also
immediately notify my supervisor and the relevant child protection authorities (e.g., police,
Department of Social Development).
Risks:
 Risk of Immediate Harm: The infant's life is in critical danger.
 Medical and Developmental Risks: If the infant survives, there's a high risk of long-
term medical complications and developmental delays.
 Risks to Other Children: The two other children, aged 7 and 9, in the household are at
immediate risk of harm.
 Mental Health of the Mother: The 16-year-old mother is likely experiencing severe
mental distress and is at risk of self-harm.
 Intergenerational Trauma: The grandmother and the entire household are affected by
this incident. There's a risk of intergenerational trauma and a cycle of abuse.
Recommended Interventions:
1. Immediate Child Protection: The infant must be placed under an emergency
protection order in the hospital. The two other children in the household also need
immediate temporary placement in a safe environment, such as a place of safety.
2. Medical and Forensic: I would collaborate with the medical team to ensure the infant
receives the best possible care and that a forensic investigation is conducted.
3. Psycho-social Support: I would arrange for urgent psychological and psychiatric
evaluation for the 16-year-old mother. I'd also offer counselling to the grandmother and
the two other children to help them cope with the trauma.
4. Legal Action: I would work with the police to ensure that a criminal case is opened
against the mother and that her rights as a minor are protected throughout the legal
process.
5. Long-term Planning: Post-recovery, I would conduct a full assessment of the family to
determine the best long-term care plan for all three children.
