, Becoming a Teacher

QUESTION 1

1.1 Teaching strategy (10 marks)

a) Definition of a teaching strategy (2 marks)
A teaching strategy is a planned approach or method a teacher uses to organise
instruction and learning activities so learners can achieve specific learning goals. It
includes teacher actions, classroom activities, resources and the ways learners interact
to build knowledge and skills.

Why teaching strategies are important in lesson planning (3 marks)

 They guide selection of learning activities that match objectives and learner
needs.
 They help structure lessons for clarity, engagement and progression (from simple
to complex).
 They enable differentiation so diverse learners (different abilities, languages,
backgrounds) can access material.
 They provide the teacher with techniques to assess understanding and promote
higher-order thinking.

Chosen strategy — Problem-Based Learning (PBL) (description: 2 marks)
Problem-Based Learning is a learner-centred strategy where students work in small
groups to investigate and solve an open, real-world problem. The teacher acts as
facilitator: presenting the problem, scaffolding inquiry, guiding research, and supporting
reflection. PBL emphasises inquiry, critical thinking, collaboration and application of
knowledge.

Practical classroom application in a diverse Grade 9 class (3 marks)
Lesson context: Grade 9 Natural Science — “Plastic pollution in our township river”.
