Open vs. Closed groups - ANS OPEN GROUPS

- ADV: new members are able to join, can function on an ongoing basis, and available to more
people

- ADV: members get to know one another, group becomes cohesive, members move
concurrently through process
- DIS: if a member leaves no replacement joins, not available to everyone
Group sizes: what are small groups? - ANS 1. 3-10 people, but ideally 7-8

- often used to deal with emotional issues (ex: families in recovery)

What are the definitions for P.E.A.C.E? - ANS 1. Praxis - thoughtful reflection and action that
occur in synchrony (ex: values made visible through deliberate action)
2. Empowerment - means nurturing each person's abilities and strengths in the context of
respect for everyone in the community
3. Awareness - active growing knowledge of self and others, and the world in which we live in
4. Cooperation - means actions that are shaped by commitments to group solidarity while
integrating the range of diversity that exist in the group
5. Evolvement - means embracing growth and change for all individuals and the group
What are the basic elements for Communication Process? - ANS - communication = ongoing,
dynamic, and multidimensional process
- active process between sender + receiver
- feedback is the message returned by the receiver
What is Feedback? - ANS - it indicates whether the intended meaning of the senders
message was understood by the receiver --> senders need to seek verbal and nonverbal
feedback to ensure that clear communication has occurred
For Feedback to be effective... - ANS the sender and receiver must be sensitive and open to
each others messages, clarify the messages and modify behavior accordingly
