Signs and symptoms of brain cancer:
Give this one a try later!
- increased ICP
- HA, N/V, vision changes, seizures, AMS, stroke sx, personality changes
- Local/focal= from specific region of brain
,management of GVHD:
Give this one a try later!
- take immunosuppressant meds (prograft, cyclosporin) to prevent GVHD
treat GVHD with:
- corticosteroids (watch SE), ABX, antivirals, antifungals to prevent infection
what is MOHS surgery

layer by layer is removed, frozen, and analyzed until all tissue layers have
been removed
what is a stem cell transplant and why is it used?
Give this one a try later!
, BMT: stem cells taken from bone marrow
Hematopoietic stem cell transplant: done for hematologic malignancies
(myeloma, leukemia, NH lymphoma)
- stem cells transfuse through IV, travel to bone marrow, make new cells
(engraftment which takes 2-4 wks)
- new bone marrow starts to be functional and make blood cells (until the
cells are made, there is still high risk for bleeding and infection)
* patients should receive high doses of chemo to oblate their own bone
marrow before the transplant to prevent rejection of new stem cells
Nursing considerations with chemo:
Give this one a try later!
- watch allergic reactions
- this is a vesicant: use big veins or CVC
- watch NADER: lowest count of blood cells (hits 7-14 days post infusion)
OSHA guidelines:
- label meds as hazards
- wear chemo gown and gloves
- goggles for giving liquid or aerosol
- flush twice
- double glove
- spills handles by trained staff and spill kit
- YELLOW Disposal
