Question 1: Critical Evaluation of the Role of Curriculum Leadership
1. Who should be responsible for curriculum leadership, and what are their
responsibilities?
In a school context, curriculum leadership should be a shared responsibility involving
the principal, Heads of Department (HODs), subject coordinators, and classroom
teachers. However, the principal plays the central role as the instructional leader of the
school. Effective curriculum leadership ensures that teaching and learning are aligned
with national policies, respond to learners’ needs, and promote educational
transformation.
For my subject and grade 6 Social Sciences, the curriculum leader must focus on
promoting meaningful learning rather than rote memorisation. Based on Learning Unit 4,
curriculum leaders must go beyond the transmission of "common sense" knowledge.
Instead, they should create conditions for "making sense" as described by Deleuze a
process where students engage critically with unfamiliar or challenging content that
provokes thought and reflection (Snir, 2018).
