MEDIA ETHICS

Question 1

Introduction

The field of media ethics plays a critical role in guiding the conduct of
media practitioners in an increasingly complex and dynamic media
landscape. Ethics, in general, refers to a system of moral principles that
influence how individuals behave in society. Media ethics, specifically,
provides a framework for determining acceptable and unacceptable
behaviour within journalistic and media practices. This question aims to
explore foundational aspects of media ethics by focusing on different
ethical theories and frameworks.

The discussion begins by explaining the general concept of ethics and
how it relates to our everyday decision-making. It then moves into the
philosophical underpinnings of ethics by distinguishing between meta-
ethics and normative ethics, which serve as the foundation for ethical
reasoning. Following this, the difference between normative media
theories and professional media ethics is explored, as these inform
both policy-making and daily media practice. Finally, three core meta-
ethical theories are identified and analysed to highlight their key
characteristics and relevance to ethical decision-making in media
contexts. Together, these discussions aim to provide a critical
understanding of how ethical theories shape and support responsible
media behaviour.

, Question 1.1

Describe, in your own words, what you think ethics and media ethics is
about. Also elaborate on the importance of ethics and how our daily
behaviour is often determined by it.

Answer 1.1

Ethics refers to a set of moral principles or values that guide individuals
on what is right and wrong. It helps us decide how to act in different
situations by promoting fairness, honesty, integrity, and respect for
others. Ethics is not based only on laws, but on the idea of doing what is
morally correct, even when no one is watching.

Media ethics is the application of these moral values in the field of
media and journalism. It focuses on what is acceptable and unacceptable
behaviour for media professionals, such as journalists, editors, and
broadcasters. Media ethics includes issues such as truthfulness,
accuracy, objectivity, fairness, respect for privacy, and the avoidance of
harm.

Media professionals have a responsibility to inform the public in a
truthful and balanced manner. For example, a journalist should not
publish false information just to gain attention, and they should avoid
invading someone’s privacy unless it serves a significant public interest.

The importance of ethics in daily life is that it helps shape our
behaviour and decisions. Whether we are at home, work, school, or in
public, ethical values influence how we treat others and how we handle
responsibilities. For instance, ethics guide us not to cheat, steal, lie, or
harm others, even when we might not face legal consequences.
