[Task 1]

Describe the main activities carried out within each organisation. [science department in a college and
pharmacy in a hospital]

In the science department of a college, students take part in scientific lessons such as biology, chemistry,
and physics where they are provided with lecturers who provide them with activities to strengthen their
knowledge such as interactive classwork and lab practicals. Students also use their knowledge to take
exams on what they have learnt, or complete assignments provided by their lecturers. Lecturers ensure
that their students are taught to the best of their abilities no matter who they are and lead the lessons
and practicals for their students which strengthens the students' opportunities for the future. Lab
technicians provide all the equipment, chemicals/ substances required for the practicals that take place
during lessons. In these practicals lecturers are required to complete risk assessments before starting
any practical to reduce the likeliness of risks occurring. Risk assessments are completed by firstly
researching the hazards that could occur when using the equipment and substances required in the
practical, identifying to what extent the staff is trained to, assessing who is at risk of these hazards,
putting health and safety measures in place to reduce/ mitigate these risk factors then deciding if it's
safe to continue the practical. This way it is certain that no one is at risk of getting injured. Information is
also given to the students so that they can also aid themselves in not getting hurt during the practical
that is to take place. There are also support systems put in place for students who are having difficulties
such as support assistants who students can raise any concerns they have with their learning or with
classmates.

However, in a pharmacy that is in a hospital, pharmacists are required to produce, store, and dispense
medicines to patients who require them under a prescription. Pharmacists are also required to stock
medicines within the pharmacy and deliver them to patients throughout the hospital. They also deal
with patients in person or via telephone calls. Although they deal with patients openly, they are also
required to keep their personal data protected and private such as their medical history, prescription,
identity, and health records – this is done by data management in the pharmacy. Pharmacists are also
provided with training when they join the job to ensure they comply with all the rules and regulations on
the site to reduce theirs and others hazard risks around them. Pharmacists are also obliged to advise
patients on how to use and store the medication prescribed to them and what to expect after taking the
medication such as side effects that may occur.

Task 2

Describe the potential hazards in each department selected and complete a table which clearly shows
the links between the hazards and the measures taken.

DEPARTMENT 1: PHARMACY DISPENSARY IN A HOSPITAL

biological substances. -Employees should make sure to take full
advantage of safety equipment provided to fully
maximise their safety while using and biological
substances.
-Employers must ensure a risk assessment is
completed for any activity taking place, such as the
making of the medicine.
-Thorough sterilisation of equipment before and
after use to prevent cross contamination/infection.
-Must dispose of all biologically hazardous.
equipment (e.g., in separate bins to minimise
infection, contamination, and diseases.)
-Training must be provided on the storage of the
biological chemicals.
-Maintain a hygiene routing (e.g., washing hands
after handling any substance).
-Provide suitable hygiene facilities
-Make sure workstations and surroundings are
cleaned before and after use.
-Anyone must not eat or drink in the labs to
prevent disease/ infection.
-Ensure only certain people have access to these
substances to make sure the safety level is at its
highest.

HSW (Health and Safety at Work (1974)) -> Ensure
everyone complies by having first aid care
available, having suitable positions for all people
for example by not making a physically unfit
person carry loads, make sure staff is trained to
handle equipment safely, provide
manuals/handbooks/instructions to refer to when
handling substances/ equipment.

CLP (Classification, Labelling and Packaging
(2009))-> Employer must comply to this legislation
by provide clear labelling on all substances and
equipment that show the name, hazard symbols
and hazards and correct storage methods.

RIDDOR (Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and
Dangerous Occurrences Regs (1995)) -> Employers
and the self-employed must comply with this
regulation by keeping an accident book with the
date, time, and place of the event with a brief

2

, description of what occurred. Only report injuries
and deaths not emotional/psychosocial. For
example, the loss of sight, amputation, inhalation
of toxins, cuts, diseases etc.

COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to
Health (2002)) -> Make sure substances aren't
easy to access and only under supervision of
people who are trained to handle them e.g., lab
technicians, provide correct training to anyone
who will use these substances, make sure all
substances are stored correctly and make sure risk
assessments have taken place before the use of
any substances in the workplace.

CLP (Classification, Labelling and Packaging (2009))
-> To comply with this regulation, employers must
provide clear labelling on all substances and
equipment to prevent injury, infection, and
contamination such as clear storage instructions,
expiry dates and nutritional information.

Health and safety Regulation (1981) -> To comply
with this regulation, there should be trained staff
employed who are available to provide the
necessary first aid care such as applying dressing
to a wound, or cleaning blood from a cut, there
should be an optimal ratio of first aid workers to
employees as there could be multiple accidents at
once, adequate equipment and facilities should be
provided such as bandages, and sick buckets.

Management of Health and Safety at Work (1999)
-> To comply with this regulation, employers must
train employees to handle all substances and
equipment correctly to prevent any accidents from
occurring and make sure risk assessments take
place before providing any employee with
dangerous tasks.

COMAH (Control of Major Accident Hazards (2015)
-> To comply with this regulation, employers
should take all the necessary steps to mitigate the
number of hazards and risks that are present in
the workplace such as completing risk
assessments, providing complete training, and
considering environmental factors such as
pollution.
