CHAPTER1: THE MILLENNIAL GENERATION: UNDERSTANDING AND ENGAGING TODAY’S
LEARNERS:
Defining the Millennial generation by birth date and name.
The Millennial Generation vary from the beginning year 1982 to the ending year 2003.
This cohort is known by different names, which include: Generation-D, Net Gen, Gen Y,
Newmills, Nexters, Generation Next, Echo Boomers, and the Digital Generation.
They are the first ubiquitous cohort of learners raised on and confirmed as experts in the
latest, fastest, coolest, greatest, newest electronic technologies on the planet. Along with
being the most diverse group of children, some characteristics of this generation are their

Characteristics associated with Millennials are:
1. Technology savvy: communicate more through technology than in person (blog, google,
tweet, chat and use Wikipedia to acquire sources of information)
2. Rely on search engines for information: search for everything with search engines such
as Google.
3. Prefer teamwork and collaboration: they prefer to work in teams rather than alone.
4. Constantly seek feedback: especially on their academic performance.
5. Short attention span: prefer to be actively engaged and have fun in doings tasks,
otherwise boredom and impatience take over.
6. Learn by trail and error: prefer to play with technology, hitting keys until they figure it out.
7. Interested in multimedia: prefer interactive media rather than passive media
8. Multitask on everything: can do several tasks easily at the same time
9. Learn by inductive discovery: prefer to learn by performing tasks rather being told what
to do
10. Emotionally open: prefer an environment where they can express their feelings openly.
Probably the starkest difference between the Millennial Generation and any other generation is the
availability and accessibility of information.
This generation believes that knowledge is power, and all knowledge can be found quickly through
the internet.
With all of these characteristics in mind, Howe and Strauss (2000) believe that the following
