ANSWERS / GRADED A+ / GUARANTEED PASS!!
Adjusting Spray Rate
- answer-Adjust pressure (minor change), change speed or replace nozzle tips.
Annuals
- answer-Complete all stages of development within a single year; examples -
common chickweed, henbit and deadnettle
Basal Bark and Cut Surface/Stump Treatments
- answer-Girdling - damages plant's bark, done with an axe
Frilling - Girdling but with the application of an herbicide
Injection - Similar to a frill but cuts don't overlap
Freshly cut stump - treated with herbicide to reduce sprouting. Applied to outer
portion of exposed sapwood.
Basal bark - herbicide carried through the bark with an oil based carrier, usually
diesel
Biennials
- answer-Complete life in 2 years; complete seedling and vegetative stages the first
year, where they exist as rosettes or clumps of leaves on the soil surface. In the 2nd
year they further mature and set seed. Examples - bull thistle, musk thistle, wild
carrot, common burdock
Calibration and Application rate
- answer-See chapter 7
Cambium
- answer-Tissue that produces new cells or new growth. In woody broadleaf plants,
the xylem and phloem are separated by the cambium layer (just under the bark).
Cambium produces xylem cells to the inside (wood and sap wood) and phloem
cells to the outside.
Certification
- answer-The commissioner of agriculture has the authority to authorize one to use,
supervise the use, buy or sell restricted-use pesticides. Applicators of restricted-use
pesticides must be certified as private or commercial applicators.
, Classification of Herbicides
- answer-Chemical nature; formulation (dry and applied granular or as a liquid or
solid to be mixed with water as a carrier); area of use; use pattern (soil, foliar, bark
or cut stump applied); weed control spectrum (selective or non-selective)
Components of a Sprayer
- answer-Supply tank, pump, flow control, nozzles, strainers, pressure gauges,
hoses and fittings.
Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act
(CERCLA)
- answer-Gives EPA authority to enforce or to carry out cleanups of releases or
threatened releases of hazardous substances, pollutants and contaminants resulting
from chemical spills or from hazardous waste sites when there is imminent and
substantial danger to public health, welfare or the environment.
Conductive Tissue
- answer-How plants move water, nutrients and plant food.
Contact Herbicide
- answer-Control only the green, active portion of the plant contacted in the initial
application. Restricted or no movement within the plant. Usually non-selective.
Good for control of annuals.
Drift
- answer-Refers to situations where air currents carry spray droplets beyond the
target area. Occurs at the time of application. Certain herbicides can be devastating
to adjacent crops and other desired vegetation.
EPA
- answer-Environmental Protection Agency, responsible for the registration of
pesticides, reviewing labels for accuracy and safety, development of pesticide
applicator training materials and enforcement of federal pesticide laws and
regulations.
EPA Standards for certification of pesticide applicators
- answer-Classification of pesticides as general or restricted use; label directions
must be followed for use, safety, mixing, diluting, storage and disposal
