TMN3704 Assignment 4 2025 (Answer Guide) - Due 14 August 2025
TMN3704 Assignment 4 2025 (Answer Guide) - Due 14 August 2025 ACTIVITY 1 1.1 Define the concept of “Common Fraction”. A common fraction is a mathematical expression that represents a part of a whole. It is written in the form a⁄b, where a is called the numerator and b is the denominator, with b ≠ 0. The numerator indicates how many parts are being considered, while the denominator indicates the total number of equal parts into which the whole is divided (DBE, 2011). 1.2 Identify and explain any two key concepts from the definition of a common fraction given above. a) Numerator The numerator is the top number in a fraction. It tells us how many parts of the whole are being taken or considered. For example, in the fraction 3⁄4, the number 3 is the numerator, indicating that three out of four equal parts are being referenced. Understanding the role of the numerator is essential in fraction calculations and in comparing the size of different fractions. b) Denominator The denominator is the bottom number of the fraction and shows into how many equal parts the whole is divided. In the same example of 3⁄4, the number 4 is the denominator, meaning the whole has been divided into four equal parts. A strong understanding of the denominator is critical for tasks such as finding equivalent fractions, comparing fractions, and performing addition or subtraction with like and unlike denominators. These two concepts numerator and denominator are central to comprehending the structure and function of fractions and are foundational in learners’ conceptual development of rational numbers (Van de Walle et al., 2016).
