QUESTION 1

QUESTION 1: Visual Arts Activity Design

1.1 Describe your Visual Arts activity. (8 marks)

ANSWER:

In this 30-minute Visual Arts lesson, Grade 5 learners will engage in an activity titled “Wild Faces:
Creating African Animal Masks with Recycled Magic.” The lesson will begin with a brief 5-minute
introduction where I discuss African animals, their significance in African cultures, and the concept
of using art to represent identity and environment. Learners will then spend 5 minutes choosing an
animal and observing its features such as ears, horns, snouts, and facial patterns. For the next 10
minutes, learners will sketch their chosen animal’s face shape onto recycled cardboard or cereal
boxes using pencils, cut out the shapes carefully, and create 3D elements like ears or horns by
folding and attaching smaller pieces of cardboard to the base mask. In the final 8 minutes, learners
will use crayons to colour their masks creatively, adding patterns, textures, and symbolic designs to
represent their animal’s characteristics and cultural meanings. The last 2 minutes will be dedicated
to peer sharing where each learner explains which animal they created, what features they included,
and why. This activity teaches them fine motor skills such as cutting and folding, the visual element

, of line to create details, balance in arranging facial features symmetrically, environmental
awareness by reusing materials, and cultural appreciation through animal symbolism. The
structured phases ensure smooth progression within the allocated 30 minutes while maximising
creativity and learning outcomes despite limited resources.

1.2 Provide the Grade, Term, Topic, Theme and CAPS page number. (4 marks)

• Grade: 5

• Term: 3

• Topic: Visual Arts – Create in 2D and 3D

• Theme: Mask-making – African Animal Masks with Recycled Materials

• CAPS Page Number: Page 48

1.3 Identify and explain one Element of Art explored. (2 marks)
The Element of Art explored is Line. Learners will use lines to define and outline the shape of their
animal masks, add interior details such as stripes, whiskers, or scales, and create patterns that
enhance their animal’s identity. Lines will also be used to separate colour sections and to design
textures, teaching learners how lines vary in thickness, length, and direction to create visual effects
and meaning in artworks.

1.4 Identify and explain one Principle of Design explored. (2 marks)
The Principle of Design explored is Balance. Learners will learn to arrange facial features like eyes,
ears, and horns symmetrically on both sides of the mask to create a sense of visual equilibrium. This
helps them understand that balance in design contributes to harmony and aesthetic appeal, which
is especially important in mask-making to ensure proportionality and recognisable forms.

1.5 Creative and relevant title. (2 marks)
“Wild Faces: Creating African Animal Masks with Recycled Magic.”

1.6 Use of specified art materials. (2 marks)
Learners will creatively use pencils to sketch their design outlines and add fine details for facial
features. Recycled paper or cardboard will serve as the mask base and additional 3D attachments
such as ears or horns by folding and layering. The single coloured medium, crayon, will be used for
bold colouring, shading, and creating vibrant patterns representing the unique markings of each
chosen animal, thus maximising limited resources in an impactful way.
