Introduction The field of career psychology is undergoing a transformative shift, driven by advancements in digital technology and the evolving needs of diverse client populations. In the contemporary digital era, computer-based testing has become a standard practice in career assessment, enhancing the efficiency, accessibility, and scalability of psychological services (Coetzee, Ferreira, & Potgieter, 2022). These technological innovations offer great potential for improving the accuracy and relevance of career guidance, especially when aligned with valid psychometric principles and ethical guidelines. However, the benefits of technology can only be fully realised when applied responsibly, with sensitivity to individual differences, cultural diversity, and the broader socio-economic context. For aspiring career development practitioners, it is imperative to integrate theoretical knowledge with ethical and practical skills in both assessment and counselling. The guidelines proposed by Bester and Stander (2021) offer a structured approach for applying technology-based assessments in a professional, fair, and developmentally appropriate manner. At the same time, ethical counselling remains at the heart of client support, especially when working with vulnerable individuals facing psychological distress and career uncertainty. The case of Lindiwe, a young woman experiencing anxiety and self-doubt at the end of a learnership programme, underscores the need for a client-centred, ethically grounded approach that promotes dignity, hope, and empowerment. This paper explores two critical dimensions of professional practice in career psychology: the responsible application of technology-based assessments and the ethical obligations that guide client interactions. By addressing both areas, the paper highlights the importance of balancing innovation with integrity to provide career services that are both effective and ethically sound in the South African context.
