legislative intent ANS: establishes the intent to protect the health, safety, and well-being of children

Ordinance ANS: a local law
Department of Children and Families ANS: licensing authority that also writes childcare regulations
Owner ANS: the person who is licensed to operate the childcare facility
weekend childcare ANS: childcare provided between the hours or 6 p.m. on Friday and 6 a.m. on
Monday
Director ANS: on-site administrator or individual who has the primary responsibility for the day-to-day
operation, supervision, and administration of a childcare facility
prolonged childcare ANS: allows care to be provided for 24 hours or longer for a child whose parent or
guardian works a shift 24 hours or more
, childcare facility ANS: any child care center or child care arrangement that provides care for more than
five children, unrelated to the operator, and that receives a form of payment
school age childcare ANS: provide care for children 5+ years old that are enrolled in kindergarten or

programs, summer day & 24-hour camps, Vacation Bible School programs, and hotels & resorts
religious exemption ANS: faith-based childcare programs must be accredited by or member of
organizations that have adopted and published standards for health, safety, and sanitation, and require
their programs to comply with these standards and local standards
Gold Seal Quality Care ANS: recognizes child care programs that have earned accreditation; established
this status so programs could qualify for exemption from property taxes
Local licensing agencies ANS: a county whose licensing standards meet or exceed the minimum state
standards may choose to act as a local licensing agency (Broward, Hillsborough, Palm beach, Pinellas, &
Sarasota)
federal laws (ADA & IDEA) ANS: American with Disabilities Act (ADA) was established to protect
individuals with disabilities against discrimination - public entities must make reasonable
accomadations; Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) ensures that students with disabilities
have access to a free appropriate public education
