6.1 The basics
Plants are alive. It has five basic structures: leaves, stem, flowers, roots and fruit.
They use flowers for reproduction because flowers attract insects. The stem holds
the plant upright, food and water are transported through the stem. Leaves
produce food and roots are there to anchor the plant to the soil. Fruits are there
to make sure the seeds are transported to different locations.
Roots can search for water and nutrients. Leaves can grow towards light. Plants
don’t have the same sense organs as animals but it does have specific senses in
various parts of it’s body. Plants can be called modular. Almost every part of the
plant has the possibility to grow a new unit like itself. If you remove 50% of a
plant or a tree it will still grow on while you take 10% of a mammal it would
possibly die.
The roots grow first out of the seed. When the roots start to grow bigger the stem
grows out of the soil. The first leaves start to grow. The young plant grows and
develops more leaves and roots. The plant will start to grow flowers, fruits and
eventually new seeds.
