I would respond to Thabang with understanding and guidance. Adolescents are in
Erikson’s psychosocial stage of identity vs. role confusion, meaning they are still
forming their sense of self and may lack clarity about moral boundaries. According to
Kohlberg’s stages of moral development, Thabang might be in the conventional level,
where he follows rules but may not fully understand ethical principles behind them.
Cognitively, Piaget suggests adolescents are entering the formal operational stage,
allowing for abstract thought, but they may not always apply it effectively.

I would explain to Thabang why using AI to generate an entire essay without citation is
dishonest, even if he did not intend to cheat. I would use this moment as a teaching
opportunity rather than punishment, encouraging intrinsic motivation (from self-
determination theory) by showing him how capable he is of writing with proper support. I
would offer help in improving his writing skills and create an environment where it’s safe
