High Pressure Boiler Practical questions
What type of Boiler is It ANS: scotch Marine, dry back, horizontal tube, 3-pass

How do you know that it is a fire tube ANS: no drums

how many passes ANS: 3

how do you know its 3-pass ANS: breaching is in the rear

when you first come on watch what do you do. ANS: check water level, blow down water column, gauge
glass and low water cut off, reset lwco, check log book

which would you blow down first ANS: water column, gauge glass

if you cant see the water level, what do you do. ANS: shut the water at the side of the boiler, close all
steam outlets, let boiler cool

if water level is low what do you do ANS: trouble shoot the feed water pumps and feed water
control(mcdonald miller lwco)

if water level is high what do you do ANS: shut off feed water by closing valve at boiler use surface blow
downs , shut boiler off, check water level using my tri cocks, trouble shoot the pump and feed water
control.

how do you user bottom blow downs ANS: 2 man operation, 1 to watch the gauge, 1 to operate the
vaves, check to see if the slow opening vale is closed, open the quick opening valve, slowly open the
slow opening valve, 20-30secs. close the slow opening valve, close the quick opening valve, open the slow
opening valve, close the slow opening valve.

,when do you blow down the boiler, ANS: remove sludge and sediememt, or once a day, done at low
load, when first starting up.

if tds were 5000 would you blow down the boiler ANS: yes tds should be between 2000-2500(in the DA
about 300)

what is the surface blowdown for ANS: Remove scum and oil

how many low water cut offs are there ANS: 2

which LWCO completely takes out boiler and wont let it back on ANS: the one by itself on the left side
with the manual reset.

name some boiler safeties ANS: vapor stat, solenoids,LWCO,safety valves, explosion door, high furnance
pressure trip, flame detector, fuel oil fusible link, pressuretrol, proof of closure valves, non return valve

are solenoids on the gas line safeties, ANS: yes

why are there 2 safeties on the boiler ANS: asme requires atleast 2 for heating surface greater then 500
sq.ft.

how often do you test safety valves ANS: manually once a month, annually by raising the pressure

how do you know the heating surface ANS: on the name plate. 1750sqft fireside

point out flame detector how does it work. ANS: the infrared light drops the resistance across a lead
sulfide cell allowing current to flow, this is picked up by the controler, if there is no flame then there is
no current

, what are some oil safeties point them out, ANS: fusible link, low pressure oil switch

what are some gas safeties ANS: solenoids, high and low press gas switch, proof of closure. Solenoids fail
closed upon loss of power

what if the proof of closure valve is stuck open can the boiler light on oil. ANS: no

where is the low pressure gas cut out ANS: on the gas line before the regulator

where is the high pressure gas cut out ANS: on the gas line after the regulator

is the fuel to the burner high or low pressure ANS: after the pump at the burner about 200 psi High
pressure

how is flame ignited ANS: gas pilot is ignited by an ignition transformer, Gas pilot lights the main fuel
burner

where secondary air ANS: under the burner, provides air for combustion

where is primary air ANS: comes in behind the burner, intended for turblance,to improve combustion

waht is a vapor stat ANS: senses draft and trips boiler if primary air is lost.

where does air come from ANS: boiler room, thru fresh air dampers

what is a good stack temperture ANS: 250-350 deg F.
