Instructions to the Learner
This self-learning instructional module is intended to assist the clinician in learning and
understanding the electrocardiogram. To properly understand and interpret the
electrocardiogram with competence requires an understanding of the patient, cardiac
anatomy and physiology, practice and more practice. You should seek out every learning
opportunity that is presented to you in the clinical setting. While this manuscript contains
many of the common electrocardiogram rhythms that you may expect to encounter,
unique patients will present with some things that you will not see in a textbook. It is
these unique experiences that a textbook cannot teach you, and which you will only gain
with hands on clinical experience. Seek out learning opportunities; do not wait for them
to find you.
You should read and study the materials, and when ready, move onto the workbook
section of this text. You should use the workbook to learn how to properly measure the
different intervals and waveforms, properly calculate heart rate and correctly identify the
different electrocardiogram rhythms. The answer key should be utilized to check your
work. When you are ready to move beyond the textbook and into the clinical setting,
there is a pocket guide in the back of this text, which you can keep handy and use it to
quickly review your electrocardiogram rhythms.
