They shall always be within sight and audible warning of the next preceding lookout. The sole duty of advanced watchman is to warn the work zone watchman of the approach of trains or rail equipment Ample Time - Requires workers to be in a position of safety not less than 15 seconds before a train or rail equipment moving at the max speed authorized on that track, can pass the location of the Roadway Worker; or sufficient levels of protection that permit workers time to clear the tracks without urgent movement Ballast - The coarse gravel laid to form a bed for a railroad, for the purpose of holding track in line and surface Block - A length of track with defined limits on which train movements are governed by the automatic train protection signaling system or by instruction from Rail Operations Control Center (ROCC) Chain Marker - A survey stationing marker located every chain along the tracks identifying the distance, in multiples of 100 ft, to the middle of the Metro Center platform(or the most inbound end of the rail line, if the line does not pass through Metro Center). Track locations are expressed to the nearest foot by a letter representing the line, the track number, a hyphen, the nearest chain marker inbound from the location, a plus sign and the number of feet from that chain marker Clear - 1.A term used in conjunction with a definite action so as to release control from one person to another 2. The state of a controlled signal when the proceed/lunar aspect is displayed 3. While on mainline, safely outside the dynamic outline of a train or clearance envelope for trains or Rail equipment on the active track 4. Safely away from the moving parts of a track switch or electrical circuit 5. Beyond an identified location 6. It SHALL NOT be used in conjunction with radio communications as a means to respond to a directive Collector Shoe - The carborne device designed to slide on the third rail to pick up DC propulsion current. Contractor - A person or business entity that is hired by WMATA to perform work, but is not an employee of WMATA Controller - A person with the authority for controlling mainline operations Crossover - Switches and tracks arranged to provide a route from one track to another Derail Device - A fixed or portable safety device designed to guide rail vehicles off the track. The device is used for protection and collision avoidance Designee - Any person assigned by a manager to act on their behalf Dynamic Envelope - The clearance required for a rail vehicle to negotiate the system without coming into undesired contract with the infrastructure. The tolerances associated with the dynamic envelope clearance includes considerations for the combinations of loading, lateral motion, or potential suspension failure that can occur as part of normal operations. Emergency - Any condition which can or has resulted in harm to customers or employees; damage to equipment or property; a service disruption' or any combination of these circumstances. Energized - When 3rd rail power is on Escort - A WMATA employee responsible for the safe movement of personnel through and to non-roadway work areas and facilities, and must comply with all WMATA policies and procedures
