The meeting continued with a discussion on the ongoing water crisis in Soshangana
township. Members expressed concern about the lack of consistent and adequate water
supply in the area, which has had a negative impact on the community, particularly on
unemployed residents and old-age grant recipients who are struggling financially. The
Chairperson, Ms Tancred, opened the discussion by acknowledging the long-standing
efforts made by the Civic Organisation to engage municipal authorities without any
meaningful outcomes.
Several possible solutions were proposed during the meeting. Members agreed that
there is a need to escalate the matter beyond the local Ward Councillor and Municipal
Manager, who have not been responsive. One of the suggested steps was to draft a
formal petition signed by all affected residents, which would be submitted to the District
Municipality and relevant provincial departments responsible for water and sanitation.
This would be accompanied by a detailed report outlining the extent of the water crisis
and its impact on the community.
It was further suggested that the Civic Organisation reach out to the media to raise
public awareness and apply pressure on the municipality. Engaging with local radio
stations and newspapers was considered an effective way to bring attention to the
issue. In addition, members proposed partnering with non-governmental organisations
(NGOs) and community-based organisations that focus on water access and rural
development to assist in advocacy and possibly facilitate interim solutions such as water
tank deliveries.
Another proposal included organising a peaceful protest or march to the municipal
offices to demand urgent intervention. However, it was agreed that this would only be a
last resort if other efforts fail to yield results.
