, Conservatism and society
Organic society is the view that society is like the human body , it is natural and developed over
many years. Traditional and one nation conservatives believe in interdependence , that
relationships and necessary obligations of individuals to the community from which they belong is
all important in ensuring stability. This organic society is also accepting of hierarchy and authority
which for Hobbes writing at the time of the english revolution would provide a return to order .
Similarly Oakshott emphasises the importance of routines of people's daily lives and how those
traditions and routines in society create order and surety . Both traditional and one nation
conservatives therefore accept the importance of institutions such as the church , the local
school ,the local community centre.There is a belief that there should be duty and responsibility to
one another , both strands accept the idea of imperfect human nature , intellectually ,
psychologically and morally , therefore requiring a hierarchical structure to offset the potential
damaging effect of individuals doing their own thing. One nation conservatives building on the
emphasis of upon order espoused by traditional conservatives point to the danger of class conflict ,
they recognize the importance of order , they worry about the impact of capitalism and
industrialisation upon the fragile bonds of community that hold the existing social order in place.
To hold this organic society together , one nation conservatives believe that there should be a
support of state sponsored paternalism , due to it ensuring that the societal gap between the rich
and the poor would not provoke a revolution. Later conservatives would come to accept the
welfare state and Keynesian economics , to offset the social unrest within society and preserve the
organic nature of society and preserve the hierarchy by ensuring that people aren't left to get poor
to a point that they'd protest and attempt to tear down the social system. Burke also shared a fear
of revolution much like Disraeli and emphasised the work of the little platoons such as volunteers
in society , as this made people feel as part of a community decreasing the desire to rebel .
Oakeshott and Burke believe that change is needed to preserve the organic society , such as
responding to the industrial revolution , however this change must be done carefully.
However, parts of the new right do not believe in the existence of organic society , neo liberals
believe that individuals should have the right and freedom to run their own lives regardless of what
society demands of them .They believe that individuals are at a mystic and we should be less
concerned in the lack of social bonds or anomy , since individuals are capable and clever , therefore
society need not be hierarchical if it does not help the individuals desire to require wealth. These
concerns are associated predominantly with Ayn Rand , her objectivism theory rejects altruism
(charity) , she favoures a society that supports a laissez faire free market that allows selfish
