Ac1.4: Describe media representation of crime
(6 marks) (max 30 minutes)
Newspaper:

Newspapers represent crime in shocking, overdramatic, mislead, attention grabbing, bias

and irrelevant ways because it brings more readers and these types of crimes can

continuously be written about. Most crimes that are written about are violent crimes as

they are attention grabbing and outrageous crimes as people want more information about

this type of crime as they are scared by this type of crime and will want to buy more

newspapers to do with this crime as they're desperate to find out more.

Newspapers usually have certain sections for crime stories, 12.7% of newspapers have

reports about crime.

A real life example includes Doomsday America by The Independent newspaper, this

headline showed shocking imagery and showed it was the end of the world and a very

serious event.

This can be compared to War on America by The Daily Telegraph as it isn’t so intriguing as

war is usually happening anyway so some people may not view it as major. These

examples are both about the Twin Towers in 2001.

Television:

Television plays a major role in how crime is represented to the public. It is used to draw

fictional and factual crime and 1/10 of the main television is about crime or law

enforcement since the 1950s but has increased to 1/4 of all shows. Although it desentises

certain crimes and makes us unaware how serious it can be, this is seen even with very

extreme crime. Most crime shows only focus on the worst brutal stories as this is what

most people are interested in. Crime shows take up 20% of all films, this shows it is very

popular.

Examples where TV represents crime are Dahmer and Criminal Minds.

Dahmer represents a story of a serial killer who attempts to make a social commentary

and exploitation about the lives of his victims and the prejudice of society and police. A
