The Covid-19 pandemic precipitated an unprecedented global paradigm shift towards
digitally mediated environments, fundamentally reshaping societal, economic, and
educational practices worldwide. Within this profound transformation, the field of higher
education experienced a particularly acute disruption, as institutions were compelled to
rapidly transition from established contact-based instructional models to remote,
technology-enabled teaching modalities. This abrupt and widespread pedagogical and
infrastructural pivot underscores the critical importance of scrutinizing the design,
implementation, and overall effectiveness of online learning platforms utilized during this
period. Such an examination transcends mere descriptive analysis; it delves into the
long-term implications for educational resilience and the evolution of future pedagogical
models. This area of inquiry is especially pertinent in the context of South African
universities, many of which serve historically disadvantaged populations, thereby
foregrounding the complex equity dimensions of this digital acceleration. The study aims
to contribute novel knowledge towards understanding and addressing the specific
challenges and opportunities that emerged from this forced digital migration, thereby
addressing a significant gap in current scholarship.
