Content:
Cover all of the below:
• Ripple effect
how the impact of the crime spreads from the main victim to affecting those related
to them (family, community).
For example, Domestic Abuse affects many other people, abusers often experienced
the same abuse or have witnessed it when they were younger.
If domestic abuse goes unreported it can be seen as normal behaviour and when it
isn’t punished it can be repeated causing a ripple effect making it a negative
consequence.
Examples: hate crimes, drug abuse, domestic abuse

• Cultural
Cultural differences make some actions criminal in one area and not in the other. This
means that crimes may not be recognised as criminal and therefore underreported.
Case Study: Kristy Bamu
A 15 year old boy was murdered by his sister and partner to protect another child
from evil spirits (witchcraft) because he was seen as possessed with evil spirits and
was a witch after he wet his underwear. This belief came from Kindoki which is
practised in Congo and practised in churches 130 injuries were inflicted on the boy
over 5 days before he was drowned on christmas day in a bathtub during an
exorcism. Since this went unreported it was the reason for his eventual death. Since
it is a crime in the uk the offenders were punished however it can be argued that the
offenders did not see these actions as criminal or deviant.
People often ignore actions that they aren’t used to as it isn’t their responsibility to
interfere so criminals see this as an opportunity to commit crimes without any
consequences. This makes it a negative consequence as people are less likely to
report those crimes being committed and it is used to their advantage to commit
