Physical Education and Sports Coaching

Question 1: Case Study – Rural School Context (15 Marks)

a. Explain how you would introduce the value and purpose of PE to the learners
and staff.

As a newly appointed Physical Education (PE) teacher in a rural high school with
limited facilities and equipment, my first priority would be to explain the value
and purpose of PE to both learners and staff. Since learners have not previously
been exposed to structured PE, it is essential to create understanding,
excitement, and participation from the beginning.

1. Explaining the Purpose of Physical Education to Learners

I would begin by meeting with each class and introducing PE as more than just
“playing games.” I would explain that Physical Education helps learners:

Improve physical fitness and maintain healthy bodies.

Learn important life skills such as teamwork, discipline, and goal setting.

Develop mental well-being and reduce stress or anxiety through movement.

Gain confidence through physical competence.

I would use simple language and examples from their everyday lives, such as how
walking long distances to school is a form of exercise and how traditional games
like "kgati" (skipping rope) and "diketo" (stone game) build strength,
coordination, and focus. This would show them that PE is already part of their
lives—they just didn’t call it that.

, According to the CAPS policy, PE aims to develop learners holistically—physically,
socially, emotionally, and mentally (Department of Basic Education, 2011). I
would emphasize that this subject is about helping learners reach their full
potential through structured, enjoyable movement activities.

2. Educating the Staff About PE’s Importance

To get support from the staff, I would arrange a short presentation during a staff
meeting. I would explain that PE:

Supports academic performance by improving concentration and memory (Study
Unit 1).

Promotes discipline and positive behaviour in learners (Study Unit 2).

Contributes to school unity by including learners of all abilities in group activities
(Study Unit 6).

Helps address common challenges in rural schools like inactivity and obesity
(Study Unit 12).

I would also show that PE can be taught without expensive equipment by using
natural and recycled materials—such as using sandbags for weights or drawing
courts on the ground. This aligns with Study Unit 12, which encourages creativity
and resourcefulness in under-resourced schools.

3. Creating a Culture of Participation

To encourage participation, I would introduce simple, inclusive activities like
stretching, jogging, and relay games that do not require equipment. I would
explain how PE helps learners to:
