, Question 1 – Teaching Listening (30 marks)
1.1 The Six Stages of the Listening Process (10 marks)
1. Auditory Reception
o The very first step involves the physical process where the listener perceives
sound waves through their ears. This is a passive process where the auditory
system detects the presence of sound without necessarily understanding it at
this point.
2. Comprehension
o After receiving the sound, the listener interprets the auditory signals by
assigning meaning to the spoken words and sentences. This process
depends heavily on their prior language knowledge, vocabulary, and
understanding of context.
3. Evaluation
o The listener then critically assesses the information, judging whether it is
relevant, credible, and worth paying attention to based on their purpose for
listening. This involves filtering out unnecessary or irrelevant information.
4. Dissection (Analysis)
o At this stage, the listener breaks down the message into parts, identifying
main ideas, supporting details, and recognizing how the message is
structured. This helps in understanding the overall coherence and intent of the
speaker.
5. Memory Retention
o The key points or details are stored temporarily or permanently in the brain’s
memory for future use—whether for immediate discussion or later recall.
6. Active Response
o The listener actively demonstrates understanding through verbal cues,
nodding, facial expressions, or non-verbal gestures, or by asking questions to
clarify understanding. This indicates engagement and comprehension.
7. Integration
o The new information is integrated into existing mental frameworks, beliefs, or
knowledge structures, influencing the learner's perspectives or shaping new
ideas.
8. Inference Making
