The company provides water services to isolated areas and consists of two departments. The first department is responsible for digging trenches and installing water pipelines. The second department operates a bottling facility that supplies clean drinking water to various businesses and schools. This department runs an assembly line where 10 employees have specific tasks in the bottling process. Both departments operate under strict deadlines because of contractual obligations and tender agreements with the national government. At a recent management meeting, several issues relating to delays in the assembly line were discussed. A key concern raised was the frequent absenteeism of some employees. In an attempt to resolve this issue, management announced that it would implement job enlargement across both departments in the upcoming financial year. However, the announcement was immediately followed by a surge of complaints. Several employees complained of high levels of anxiety, while others accused management of wanting to add more work while keeping their remuneration the same. The workers’ union also raised objections and voiced their disagreement, warning management that such quick decisions could lead to increased absenteeism and potential resignations due to the added strain of an extra workload.
