, 3. Research Proposal
3.1 Introduction
Academic integrity is the cornerstone of university life, and plagiarism is a significant threat to
its foundations. Universities use a variety of mechanisms to reduce plagiarism such as academic
integrity and writing courses and academic integrity policies. This research proposal outlines a
qualitative study to investigate students' perspectives of the value of an academic integrity and
writing course in preventing plagiarism in the HMEMS80 module. Learning more
about students' attitudes and experiences can make a valuable contribution to the worth of
such a course and to the design of subsequent pedagogy.
3.2 Background and Literature Review (To be fully developed in the full proposal)
Current research documents the prevalence of plagiarism in the higher education system and
the numerous contributory factors, varying from unfamiliarity with the convention of the educati
onal system to pressure
to pass and ready availability of online sources. Empirical research has examined the
effectiveness of varied interventions, varying from the implementation of policies and
plagiarism-detection software to courses. Quantitative research can measure the impact of such
courses on plagiarism prevalence, but where this exists, qualitative research can tell us why
students perceive such courses as effective (or not effective) in discouraging plagiarism.
This research contributes to such literature in that it explores the
lived experience and student attitude in the HMEMS80 module in particular.
3.3 Problem Statement
What are students' attitudes toward the prevention of plagiarism through an academic
integrity/writing course in the HMEMS80 module?
3.4 Objectives of
This research aims to:
Study students' awareness of plagiarism before and upon completion of the course in academic
integrity/writing.
Assess the students' perceptions of how the writing/academic integrity course
has changed their conceptualization of citing and academic conventions.
Identify specific elements of the writing/academic integrity course that are of most (or
least) worth in deterring plagiarism.
Interpret students' suggestions for improving the academic integrity/writing course to further
reduce plagiarism.
