Different types of surgery for cancer -prophylactic (preventing - ex: remove breast)
-curatives (removes all cancerous tissue)
-debulking (remove part of tumor)
-palliative (symptom relief)
-reconstructive (to increase function of life - ex: fixing breast that was once removed)
Radiation therapy -uses high energy radiation to kill cancer cells, goal is to have minimal
damaging effect on surrounding normal tissue
-usually given in divided doses over set time
Nursing teaching for patient undergoing radiation SKIN CARE
-do not remove temporary ink or dye markings
-wash each day with water or mild soap, rinse thoroughly
-use your hand rather than washcloth to avoid friction
-dry the tx area with patting rather than rubbing
-wear soft clothing
-avoid belts, buckles, straps that rubs the skin site
-avoid exposure of area to the sun
-avoid heat exposure
AS RN:
-coordinate care/limit time of exposure
-distance yourself from the source, stay far back as possible. wear leads
Side effects of radiation therapy -radiation dermatitis
-altered taste
, -fatigue
-bone marrow suppression
A client receiving radiation for head & neck cancer reports that the skin in the radiation field is

B. "cover the area with soft clothing"
C. "be sure to wash your hands well before touching the area"

Cytotoxic systemic therapy (chemo therapy) -can be used alone, before or after, or in combo
-kills cancer cells and normal cells
-neoadjuvant chemotherapy - used to shrink tumor before surgery or radiation
-places patients at high risk for infection, immunosuppression, complications
"nadir" - pt reaches their low after chemotherapy, it affects bone marrow
KEY IS IMMUNITY
