The use of evidence-based practices being applied to Jean’s treatment regarding her

trauma is crucial to her healing process regarding both her physical condition and her mental

condition. The nature of her trauma took away Jean’s autonomy and sense of safety within her

own home. When caring for Jean, either in a hospital or within her home, being mindful of the

lasting effects of this assault needs to be discussed and accommodated by all members of her

care team. Alongside this, utilizing her beliefs, personality, and support networks can make

Jean feel safer with her care team.

In a hospital setting, abiding by the boundaries that Jean has is one small thing from

our perspective that can be implemented by the staff, but this can completely alter the course

of her treatment in all aspects. The American Psychological Association (APA) cites that one

of the primary lasting effects of sexual assault is the loss of safety and control, which can be

seen in Jean’s case (Pappas, 2022). To help Jean maintain her autotomy, her care team should

keep Jean updated on her care plan and have her be able to voice her thoughts about it. Along

with allowing Jean to be involved in her care, the staff assigned to Jean can better care for her

if they apply her beliefs and interests to her care. For example, Jean identifies as Catholic and

finds comfort in her faith. Expert in the psychology of religion and spirituality Kenneth I.

Pargament, PhD states that “Competent care rests on basic knowledge about religious and

spiritual diversity, understanding of how religion and spirituality are interwoven into adaptive

and maladaptive human behavior, and skills in assessing and addressing religious and spiritual

issues that arise in treatment.” When asked about the relationship between mental health

treatment and religion. (Pargament, 2013). Forming a basic understanding of the role Jean’s

faith plays in her life and the relationship it has with her trauma is another way that we can

work towards providing Jean with care that suits her needs.
