, Introduction
The travel and tourism industry can include accommodation services, transportation
services, food and beverage services, travel agencies, vehicle hire, and sport and
conference services. Travel and tourism in the UK is essential as it helps people
explore, visit or go to countries for business reasons and can contribute to many
jobs, directly and indirectly, to roughly around 3.64 million jobs in 2022.
Accommodation
Accommodation refers to the provision of a place to stay for travellers, visitors, and
tourists. The accommodation industry caters for a range of customers, from luxury
travellers looking for high end experiences to backpackers seeking budget options.
Some examples of accommodation include hotels, villas, hostels, caravan parks, and
camping. There are two main types of accommodation: serviced and non-serviced.
A serviced accommodation is when a service is provided along
with your overnight stays, this includes maid services such as
cleaning the rooms, changing towels, and having meals. An
example of a serviced accommodation is a hotel such as the
Hilton hotel in Manchester. The Hilton hotel can cater for both
leisure and business customers, therefore will need a range of
products to suit each type. Due to the range of customers the
Hilton offers dining in their onsite restaurants and room survive,
fitness and recreation such as an indoor pool and fitness centre,
business and work rooms like the executive lounge, business
centre, and meeting rooms. It also includes free WIFI, free
continental breakfast, drinks and canapes and a spa.
A non-serviced accommodation is when visitors look after
themselves and do their own shopping, cooking, and
cleaning. An example of a non-serviced accommodation is
holiday parks/caravan sites, such as Butlins resort in
Skegness. Butlins offer different ratings of apartments
which guests can choose to stay in from standard, silver,
or gold apartments as they all offer different facilities.
Butlins do have restaurants and entertainment facilities
such as shows and pools on sight for guests to use.
Within the accommodation sector, there is a different board basis available. Board
basis refers to the meals and drinks (and in some cases activities) that are included
with the price of the hotel booking. There are six main ones. The first one being all
inclusive. All-inclusive refers to all of your meals (breakfast, lunch, snacks and
evening meals) are included and in some cases, selected local brand and imported
