, 1. Introduction
The Enyobeni Tavern disaster of 26 June 2022 led to the tragic deaths of 21 young
people and raised complex questions about the cause of death, crowd control, and legal
responsibility. Given the conflicting reports—ranging from carbon monoxide poisoning to
methanol toxicity—expert forensic intervention was critical. This assignment explores
the value of expert assistance at the crime scene, the forensic disciplines relevant to
this case, and how cognitive interviews and proper recording techniques could help
uncover facts through witness testimonies.
2. Definitions of Key Concepts
Forensic Science: The application of scientific methods and techniques to
investigate crimes and support legal processes.
Cognitive Interviewing: A method of interviewing witnesses that uses memory
retrieval techniques to increase the quantity and accuracy of information recalled.
Crime Scene Investigation: The systematic process of identifying, collecting,
and analyzing physical evidence from the location where a crime occurred.
3. Value of Expert Assistance and Applicable Forensic Fields (1.1)
Expert assistance plays a vital role in preserving evidence integrity, identifying the
cause of death, and interpreting environmental and chemical factors that are not
immediately visible. In the Enyobeni case, the chaotic scene, lack of visible injuries, and
the presence of toxic substances required interdisciplinary expertise.
3.1 Value of Expert Assistance
Preservation of Evidence: Experts ensure that the scene is secured and
uncontaminated, crucial in environments with multiple fatalities.
