Three factors for infectious disease to develop include: - 1. Virulence
2. Dose
3. Resistance
The goal of infection control is to reduce the dose of: - microorganisms that may be shared
between individuals or between individuals and contaminated surfaces
-the more the dose is reduced the better chances for preventing disease spread.
Quality Assurance (QA) - Standards and guidelines are developed by regulatory bodies
The purpose for QA (quality assurance) related to IPAC in dental setting: (4) - 1. ensures and
maintains public safety
2. offers measuravility in the form of assessments
- promostes accountability and responsibility
-supports the notion of 'best practice' based on evidense-base decision making
Best Practice and Evidence Based Decision Making (EBDM) - •Best practice could be stated
as another term for following the standards of practice and any related evidence base
research
• It is the notion to strive for the highest standard of care
• Best practice is the actual execution of the action as researched and learned from EBDM
and standards of practice
• EBDM co-exists with best practice as eventually the knowledge researched and gained will
need to be applied / placed into clinical practice
, The IPAC Officer's role includes - the collection of evidence-base resource in a manner that
can be easily retrieved
IPAC resources utilized for written polices and procedures must be reference and should be
included in the - appendix of the IPAC manual
Routine practice indicates wearing the proper PPE to protect both clinician and client. PPE
includes: - •Gloves
•Masks
•Eyewear
•Shields
•Lab Coats
•Gowns
•Uniforms
•Shoes
PPE: Gloves - •Gloves are single use and must maintain their integrity to act as a PPE.
•During client care gloves are to be changed should they have any tears, rips, etc.
•Consider a glove change during longer appointments as well if gloves have become very
notably soiled
•Consideration must be given to clinician and / or client for glove material allergies
•To be worn immediately before a procedure
•To be removed immediately post procedure
•Must follow proper hand hygiene before placement of gloves
•There is no 'travelling' in the dental office with gloves 'on', they must be removed and
discarded in the operatory
•No jewelry (high set rings) that could puncture the gloves
PPE: Masks - •Masks are to protect both clinician and client
•Choose a proper filtration level
•Fabricated in three levels of protection: 1,2,3 with 3 offering the highest protection
•Single use items and must be disposed of after each use
