1. In your opinion, what are the causes of corruption in Sassa?

Corruption in Sassa is driven by several interlinked causes.
Firstly, weak internal controls and poor oversight mechanisms
make it easy for officials to exploit the system. The lack of
regular audits and accountability enables fraudulent activities
such as unauthorized grant approvals or ghost beneficiaries.
Secondly, political interference and nepotism create an

, environment where individuals are appointed based on loyalty
rather than competence, weakening ethical standards and
professionalism. Thirdly, low salaries and economic pressures
on employees can lead to unethical behavior, especially when
coupled with poor working conditions and limited career
advancement opportunities. In some cases, frontline workers
collude with outsiders to exploit grant systems for personal
gain. Additionally, the lack of transparency and digital
inefficiencies creates loopholes for fraud, such as duplicating
beneficiary profiles or redirecting funds. A culture of impunity,
where wrongdoers are rarely prosecuted or dismissed, further
entrenches corruption. These structural and systemic
weaknesses not only undermine Sassa’s credibility but also
erode public trust in government institutions. Addressing
these root causes requires more than disciplinary action—it
demands systemic reform and a culture of ethical governance.

Corruption in Sassa has severe consequences for both
individuals and society. For individuals, especially vulnerable
beneficiaries like the elderly, people with disabilities, and
unemployed youth, corruption can mean the loss or delay of
much-needed financial support. This disrupts their ability to
buy food, access healthcare, or pay for transport and
