STUDY SKILLS
Study Skills: listening, reading, Study Methods: Note-taking, mind-
comprehension, concentration, time mapping, summarising, electing
management, and organisation /highlighting important concepts




Ways in which note-taking serves as an effective study method to help in preparing for
examinations.

• Taking notes is a good way to remember important concepts that the teacher
has done in class.
• Taking notes helps when preparing for an exam because it also forces you to
listen more carefully in class.
• Taking your own notes allows you to put concepts in your own terms, making it
easier for you to understand them.
• Taking notes directly from what the teacher is teaching can help you narrow
down the vast amount of material to key concepts you’ll need to study later on.

Good reading habits will help you to find the information you need and to understand
and remember what you read.

Distinguish between scanning and skimming as methods of reading.

Study techniques are important skills to acquire if learners want to improve their

Listening

• Listen with your ears, but also with your eyes as you watch the speaker/s and see
how they are talking.
• Make notes by writing only the keywords so that you are still able to listen
properly.
• Keep on asking yourself questions such as: what does this mean? Where
does this fit into what I already know?
• In your own words, repeat what the speaker has said to check if you have
understood.

Memory

• Make summaries and learn them by repeating them while you are walking,
standing in queues or bathing.
• Close your eyes and form a picture of what you are trying to remember.
• Set up your own test or mock exam and try to answer the questions.
