1.1 A Grade 1 learner's parents report their child often gets sick. Suggest, by providing
specific examples, how they can use the basic food groups to improve their child's
health.


The parents should ensure the child eats a balanced diet from all five basic food
groups.


 Carbohydrates (Group 1) – Bread, cereals, rice, pasta


These give energy to help the child stay active and support the immune system. Example: A
bowl of oats or wholegrain bread for breakfast.
Fruits and Vegetables (Group 2) – Citrus fruits, green vegetables, potatoes
Rich in vitamins such as Vitamin C, which helps heal cuts and protects against colds.

Proteins (Group 4) – Lean meat, fish, eggs, beans, nuts

Fats and Oils (Group 5) – Avocado, coconut (sparingly)
Needed in small amounts for body functions. Avoid unhealthy fats like chips and sweets.
For example a small amount of peanut butter or avocado on bread.

the National School Nutrition Programme (NSNP) in promoting child health. Your
