These notes helped me get the highest mark in the country for OCR Geography A-Level in June 2024. Detailed notes for all theory and concepts in the Earth's Life Support Systems topic. Does not include detailed analysis of case studies. Water helps to create benign thermal conditions on earth - i.e. which occupy 71% of the earth's surface, moderate temp, by absorbinfg heat, storing it and releasing it slowly. Water helps to moderate the environment through clouds - clouds made up of tiny water droplets and ice crystals reflect one-fifth of incoming solar radiation lowering surface temperatures. Water vapor a potent greenhouse gas absorbs long-wave radiation from the earth to help maintain average global temp around 15 oC higher than they would be otherwise.

OCR A LEVEL GEOGRAPHY
CARBON AND WATER CYCLE

What is the importance of water in supporting life on the planet? -
correct-answers-Water helps to create benign thermal conditions
on earth -> i.e. which occupy 71% of the earth's surface,
moderate temp, by absorbinfg heat, storing it and releasing it
slowly.
Water helps to moderate the environment through clouds ->
clouds made up of tiny water droplets and ice crystals reflect one-
fifth of incoming solar radiation lowering surface temperatures.
Water vapor a potent greenhouse gas absorbs long-wave
radiation from the earth to
help maintain average global temp around 15 oC higher than
they would be otherwise.

How is water used for, fauna and people? - correct-answers-Water
makes up 65-95% of all living organisms and is vital for their
growth, reproduction and other metabolic functions.
Plants need water for photosynthesis, transpiration, and
respiration as well as to maintain their rigidity and to transport
mineral nutrients from the soil.
Water is also an essential resource for econ activity -> used to
generate electricity, irrigate crops, provide recreational facilities
and satisfy public demand as well as being needed in a huge
range of industries such as paper making.

How is carbon important to life on earth? - correct-answers-
carbon is a common chemical element -> stored in rocks i.e.
limestone, sea floor sediments, ocean water, the atmosphere and
the biosphere.
Life as we know it is carbon based built on large molecules of
carbon atoms such as proteins, carbohydrates and nucleic acids.
Also used as an economic resource i.e. fossil fuels such as oil
which can be used in a variety of products such as plastic,
synthetic fabrics etc..
