Abnormal Psychology Research Paper Rough Draft: Borderline Personality Disorder
Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a mental health condition that is characterized
by intense unstable emotions, impulsive behaviors, and difficulty regulating self-image and
relationships. Last year alone 42.4% of Americans reported receiving mental health treatment
for borderline personality disorder according to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH,
2025). Borderline personality disorder is mainly treated through psychotherapy often involving
approaches such as Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Transference-Focused Therapy, Schema
Therapy, and Mentalization Therapy to help individuals build coping mechanisms to manage
their intense emotions, unstable relationships, and impulsive behaviors. In severe cases of BPD
combinations of medication such as Anticonvulsants, mood stabilizers, and anti-anxiety drugs
are used to manage and reduce the symptoms. The purpose of this paper is to give a
comprehensive explanation of the different types of treatment for BPD and what approach is
more effective. This paper will also address the cultural and societal implications of the disorder,
and how this disorder relates to one or more models of abnormal psychology. Dialectical
behavioral therapy is the most common treatment for BPD but is not the only approach used to
treat BPD. Other forms of therapy such as mentalization-based, transference, schema therapy,
and medications are also used, but which is the most effective treatment?
