Poet Natalie Diaz wrote "Abecedarian Requiring Further Examination of Anglikan
Seraphym Subjugation of a Wild Indian Rezervation," in 2012. This poem uses angels as an
analogy for the colonizers who came to North America and stole indigenous land. Her writing
later fortified this comparison: "Pastor John's son is the angel- everyone knows angels are
white." The year 2012 gave way to many headlines about Native Americans. In his speech on
November 1st, 2012, President Obama declared November as the National Native American
Heritage (Obama, 2012). During this same speech, he also announced the Helping Expedite and
Advance Responsible Tribal Homeownership (HEARTH) Act, which was signed to engage tribal
control in leasing Indian lands (Obama, 2012). The HEARTH Act was an attempt by Obama’s
administration to mend the fractured relationship between the U.S. government and Natives.
, As reported in The Guardian, in 2012, the United Nations finalized its investigation into
the U.S. discrimination and maltreatment of Native Americans. The investigation led to the
ruling that the U.S. government return stolen Native land (McGreal, 2012). The United States
government has had a dark past with stealing land from Natives. During the United States’s
formative years, many treaties were made that abused and cheated Native Americans from their
land. In Diaz's poem, she writes, "You better hope you never see angels on the rez. If you do,
they'll be marching you off to Zion or Oklahoma, or some other hell they've mapped." This
statement is one of resentment for stealing land, as shown by Diaz's comments.
