, Diabetic Epidemic Assessing the Problem
Yesterday, I met up with my mom and three siblings for dinner to discuss Diabetes and
how to prevent it. We discussed it over a low-glycemic dinner that I prepared for them. As we
had dinner, I learned that my siblings, unlike my mom, live a sedentary lifestyle. This did not
come as a shock to me because my siblings are overweight and do not like going to the gym. As
per my mom, she loves going to Zumba classes to meet with her friends and burn some calories
while doing so.
My family was presented with data and information from the Centers for Disease
Control, which states that 8 out of 10 people are prediabetic. My mom is very well aware of her
A1c, but unfortunately, my siblings did not even know what A1c was. This shocked me, but
again, they are not in the medical field.
The main barriers encountered by my family were a lack of knowledge and motivation to
live a healthy lifestyle. They were assigned to make an appointment with their primary care
physicians to get lab work to see their A1c levels. Hopefully, they will comply with their oldest
sister's request, but we will not hold our breath. They were also encouraged to keep a food diary
and weigh themselves weekly.
Next time we meet, they will be given a plan to start moving more. Overwhelming them
with too much change might turn them off. The plan is to have them be compliant with their new
lifestyle and make it a lifetime commitment to a long, healthy life.
