UNLV BIO 189 LAB PRACTICAL STUDY
GUIDE
What are the units of measurement for mass? - Gram (g)
What are the units of measurement for length? - Meter (m)
What are the units of measurement for volume? - Liter (L)
What are the units of measurement for temperature? - Degrees Celsius (metric); Degrees
Fahrenheit (US)
What is a caliper? - A tool for measuring length, has jaws
What is a Balance? - A tool for measuring weight
What is the scientific term for "zeroing" a balance? - Tare function
what is the function on a scale that subtracts the mass of your measurement vehicle? - Tare
function AKA ZEROING OUT MUST KNOW THE WORD TARE!
What is an independant variable? - The factor being manipulated or changed by the researcher.
What is a Dependent Variable? - The response that is being measured or observed; Depends on
the independent variable.

What are control variables? - all other factors that may affect the outcome of the experiment,
that are kept constant throughout the experiment.
What axis on a graph is the independent variable shown? - The x-axis always represents the
independent variable.
What axis on a graph is the dependent variable shown? - The y-axis always represents the
dependent variable.
What is a control group? - The group that is set up the same as the experimental group but the
independent variable does not change; the group that is kept at a constant/never changes.
What is an experimental group? - The group that is subject to "treatment" or change in the
independent variable.
What is a hypothesis? - A potential explanation to a question about an observation; A tentative,
testable explanation for an observed phenomenon.
What is a Theory? - A general set of principles, supported by evidence, that explains some
aspect of nature.
What is a prediction? - what you think might happen as a result of an experiment. AN IF/THEN
STATEMENT!
What is an observation? - A piece of the natural world is observed to work in a certain way.
What are replicates? - one of several identical processes, or observations; an experiment must
be able to be repeated or replicated.
