QUESTION 1:

1.1.1 Identify the genre of EXTRACT A.

The genre of EXTRACT A is horror. This is because the story includes scary and
mysterious things. For example, the writer says, “I couldn’t shake off the feeling
of being watched” and “the lights flickered and went out, plunging me into
darkness” (Miller, The Whispering Halls). These words show that something
frightening is happening. The story takes place in an abandoned mansion, which is
a common setting in horror stories. The mention of “a chill run down my spine”
also shows fear and suspense, which are typical in the horror genre. Therefore,
EXTRACT A is a horror story because it creates a spooky and scary mood through
the setting, feelings, and strange events.

1.1.2 Analyse the use of setting to create a sense of atmosphere in EXTRACT A.

In EXTRACT A, the writer uses the setting to create a scary and mysterious
atmosphere. The story takes place in an “abandoned mansion” (Miller, The
Whispering Halls), which helps the reader feel fear and curiosity. An old, empty
house usually feels creepy because it is dark, quiet, and forgotten. The writer also
says “the creaking floorboards beneath my feet echoed through the empty halls”,
which shows that the house is very quiet and lonely. This makes the place feel
haunted and dangerous.

Another part that builds atmosphere is when the narrator finds a “dusty old
portrait of a family, their smiles seeming to hide a thousand secrets” (Miller, The
Whispering Halls). This makes the reader wonder what happened in the house
and why it is abandoned. The mystery adds to the scary feeling. Finally, when “the
lights flickered and went out”, the setting becomes dark, which increases the fear
and tension.

, In conclusion, the abandoned mansion, strange portrait, and sudden darkness all
work together to create a spooky and suspenseful atmosphere.

1.1.3 Discuss how the author uses foreshadowing in EXTRACT A to hint at events
that may unfold.

In EXTRACT A, the author uses foreshadowing to give small hints that something
scary or mysterious will happen later. At the beginning, the narrator says, “I
couldn’t shake off the feeling of being watched” (Miller, The Whispering Halls).
This makes the reader feel that something is wrong and that something bad might
happen soon. It creates a sense of danger before anything actually happens.

The author also writes about “the creaking floorboards” and an “abandoned
mansion”, which are both signs that the place is not safe or normal. These details
prepare the reader for something frightening. Another strong example is when
the narrator sees “a dusty old portrait of a family, their smiles seeming to hide a
thousand secrets” (Miller, The Whispering Halls). This shows that the house has a
hidden past, and it makes us think that something from that past may return or
be discovered.

Finally, the lights “flickered and went out”, which is a clear warning that
something scary is about to happen (Miller, The Whispering Halls). The darkness
foreshadows danger and fear.

In conclusion, the writer uses small clues like the feeling of being watched, the old
portrait, and the lights going out to hint that the story will become even scarier.
