DEVELOPMENT OF PALATE
The development of palate is significant process that involves the coordinated
growth and fusion of several tissue layers and structures during embryonic
development.
The palate forms from the fusion of two main parts and these are; primary
palate and secondary palate.
The primary palate forms from medial aspect of nasal cavity and it gives rise to
the upper jaw and nose.
The secondary palate forms from lateral aspect nasal cavity and gives rise to the
hard and soft palate.
STAGES IN PALATE DEVELOPMENT
1. WEEK 5- 6 the primary palate forms from medial nasal prominence.
2. WEEK 7-8 the secondary palate forms from lateral nasal prominence.
3. WEEK 9-10 the secondary palate grows and elevates fusing with primary
palate.
4. WEEK 11-12 the palate shelves fuse forming the hard palate.
5. WEEK 13-14 the soft palate forms from the posterior of the secondary
palate.
ASPECT OF PALATE DEVELOPMENT
1. Shelf formation, the secondary palate forms as the shelves that grows
inwards from the lateral nasal wall, shelves fuse to form the hard
palate
2. Elevation and fusion, the palate shelves elevate and fuse forming a
hard palate
3. Muscle attachment, soft palate develops from posterior portion of
