NEA Exam Questons and Answers 100% Solved

Gas convector heater/ wall heaters (room sealed) Ignition, temp setting

Closed solid room heater Damper to control air flow, boiler thermostat if there is a back

boiler

Bottle gas heater (portable, liquid petroleum gas LPG) ignition, temp setting

4 main safety issues when using a fuel burning appliance - Carbon monoxide poisoning

and fires

- Fit a smoke alarm, test every month and replace after 10 years

- Never leave candles, cigarettes unattended

- Ensure there is good ventilation

How often are landlords required to carry out a safety check with a Gas Safe registered

engineer? Every 12 months

,Warm air heating system - distributes warm air around the home

- Air is heated by a central unit using gas, oil or electricity

- Distributed using ducts and a fan to drive out the warm air into rooms.

- Heat is emitted via grilles on the floor or at the bottom of the walls

- Thermostat and timing controls

Wet central heating systems - Hot water is circulated around the home via radiators and

pipes.

- Source of hot water is the boiler which heats up water using fuels such as natural gas, oil, LPG

or solid fuel

- Gives out heat via convection

Conventional boiler/system boiler Hot water in cylinder is heated indirectly via a heat

exchanger within the cylinder. Can be fuelled by natural gas, LPG or oil. Can be condensing or

non-condensing. Hot water stored in the cylinder.

Combination boiler Extra heat exchanger within the boiler allows it to heat up water

quicker. Householders only pay for the hot water they use. Produce hot water for both space

,and water heating systems. Fuelled by natural gas, LPG or oil. Can be condensing or non-

condensing. Doesn't need a hot water cylinder.

Soild fuel room heater with back boiler Situated in fireplace in order to use existing flue.

Hot water is heated by burning solid fuel in the grate. Type of conventional boiler. 4 main types:

open fire with back boiler, closed room heater with back boiler, free standing manually fed

boiler, free standing automatically fed boiler.

Gas back boiler Situated in a fireplace to use the existing flue. Water is in a metal

container which is heated by burning gas. Type of conventional boiler.

Condensing Boiler Has a large heat exchanger or two heat exchangers which capture the

heat from flue gases and reuses it. Can be a conventional boiler or combination boiler. More

efficient as they extract more heat than non-condensing models.

Biomass boiler Domestic hot water heated via a heat exchanger in a cylinder. Boiler is

fuelled using wood pellets.

, What is a flue Flue removes the products of combustion that result from burning fossil

fuels

Open flue Air is sucked from room then dispersed out existing chimney that has been

modified. Usually used for back boilers with closed/open fire in front.

Balanced flue Used with gas fires, water heaters which are on an external wall.

Balanced flue - natural draught appliance is sealed off from the room, gasses are sucked

in from outside through one pipe and emitted through another

Balanced flue - fan assisted Improves efficiency of a boiler. Boiler does not need to be

fitted on an external wall. Rate of gasses being sucked in/emitted is regulated by a fan. Fan can

propel/suck gases from further away.

Gas multi-point instantaneous water heater Central unit with several outlets (taps). Unit

operated by turning any tap on within home. Gas burner ignited and burns when any tap is

turned on.
