, Assignment 01: Interactive Communication Technologies and the Organisational
Environment
Introduction
The modern business world is constantly evolving, shaped by new technologies, global
trends, and the rapid exchange of information. One of the biggest shifts in recent years
has been the rise of Web 2.0 technologies, which have transformed how organisations
communicate and operate. These changes are not just about new tools; they have
completely altered the way businesses engage with employees, customers, and
stakeholders.
To understand these shifts, we need to look at the nature of today’s organisational
environment, which is often described using the term VUCA—Volatility, Uncertainty,
Complexity, and Ambiguity. Additionally, we will explore how interactive communication
technologies have changed organisational communication and why agility has become
a key survival factor in this fast-moving world.
The Contemporary Organisational Environment: VUCA
The modern organisational environment is no longer stable and predictable. Instead, it
is characterised by VUCA:
Volatility: Things change rapidly, and markets can be unpredictable. A trend that
is relevant today may become obsolete tomorrow. For example, a business
relying on a specific social media platform for marketing may suddenly need to
adapt if user preferences shift.
Uncertainty: Companies often find it difficult to predict what will happen next. For
instance, regulatory changes or sudden technological advancements can disrupt
industries without warning.
