Chemical Context of Life
Atom: only contains protons and neutrons
- Number of protons determine identity of atom
- Electron distribution determines its ability to form bonds
- Mostly filled with empty space
Compound: Two or more combined elements (made of atoms joined by bonds)
If it is a molecule, you know exactly how many elements is involved
Ionic compounds are many times compounds but not molecules
Matter: made up of elements
Elements: substance that cannot be broken down by chemical reactions. 92
elements
- 20-25 % of which are essential elements for life
Must know the atomic number of:
Hydrogen: 1
Carbon: 6
Nitrogen: 7
Oxygen: 8
Atomic number: represents the number of protons in the nucleus of the element
