FAE (FIRE APPARATUS ENGINEER) ILLINOIS / ACTUAL
EXAM QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS (A+ GUIDE
SOLUTION) NEWEST 2025/2026

Terms in this set (163)

What does one cubic foot of 62.5 lbs
water weigh?

What does One cubic foot of 1.728 cubic inches
water contain in inches?

What does One cubic foot of 7.5 gallons
water contain in gallons?

What does One gallon of 8.35 lbs
water weigh?

What does One gallon of 231 cubic inches
water contain in inches?

What is One foot of water .434 psi
exert as a back pressure?

How high will One psi elevate 2.304 feet
water?

What is atmospheric pressure 14.7 psi
at sea level?

What is the maximum lift 34 feet
for drafting?
(Theoretically)

, 1.13 feet of lift
How high does One inch (1")
mercury (inches in vacuum)
lift?

What is the recommended 10 psi
minimum psi that should be
maintained on the
compound gauge when
taking water from a hydrant?

What is Static pressure? Stored or potential energy that is available to force water
through pipes and fittings, fire hose, and adapters.

Residual Pressure That part of the total pressure that is not used to overcome
friction or gravity while forcing water through fire hose, pipe,
fittings, and adapters.

How to calculate psi loss for Take Static pressure and subtracting residual pressure which
each additional line off gets you your drop. Take your drop and multiply it by (2)² for
hydrant and know how many second line, (3)² for third line, (4)² for forth line, (5)² for fifth
lines can be taken off line. so long as after you multiply drop and the multiplayer
hydrant? for the number line and still have 10 psi left based off static
pressure you can have that many lines if you have less than
10 psi you can not operate that number of lines.

Examples of how to Example: Static pressure: 65 psi Residual pressure : 60 psi
calculate psi loss for each Drop: 5 psi
additional line off hydrant
2nd line: 2²=4: 4x5= 20
3rd line: 3²=9: 9x5= 45
4th line: 4²=16: 16x5= 80 This line can't be done because it is
over 65 psi

, What are all the steps in 1. 2 Hour: 100% @ 150 psi
Certification Test (preservice 2. 1/2 hour: 70% @ 200 psi
tests)?
3. 1/2 hour: 50% @ 250 psi
4. 10 minutes: 100% @ 165 psi (overload or spurt test)

What is a Spurt or Overload
100% @ 165 psi (done in certification test for 10 minutes)
test?

What are all the steps in a 1. 20 minutes: 100% @ 150 psi
Service Test? 2. 10 minutes: 70 % @ 200 psi
3. 10 minutes: 50% @ 250 psi
Optional: 100% @ 165 psi (overload or spurt test)

What are Pump Tests? 100% capacity @ 150 psi net pump pressure
70% capacity @ 200 psi net pump pressure
50% capacity @ 250 psi net pump pressure

What is Net Engine/Pump Net Pump Pressure (NEP) is the measurement of the total
Pressure (NEP)? work performed by the pump:
a. To lift water into the pump (drafting)
b. To discharge water from the pump
NEP= Suction Side Work(drafting) + Discharge Side
Work

Examples of figuring out Examples:
Net Engine/Pump Pressure Discharge gauge reads 165 psi but you are getting supplied by
(NEP) hydrant @ 65 psi on your intake gauge. So the net pressure
would only be 100 psi.
Now your are drafting and Intake gauge reads 20" mercury
(-20) and Discharge reads 120 psi. So your net pump
pressure is 140

What is Pump Discharge Pump Discharge Pressure (PDP) is:
Pressure? PDP= Net pump pressure(NEP) - Suction Side Work

How do you figure out Suction Side Work(psi)= Lift (ft)+Intake Hose
Suction Side Work ? FL(Friction Loss) (psi) Divided by 2.3
