ASSIGNMENT 1

DATE: 16 APRIL 2025

QUESTION 1

1. We need to know that reading does not always follow the same process as reading
functional writing, such as information boards, is different from reading fiction for pleasure.
(TUT501 2020: 9)

1.1 In view of the statement provided above, explain how pre- and post-reading
techniques enhance critical reading? Your answer should be in a paragraph of 150 words.

Critical reading is a skill that helps readers understand and evaluate texts deeply. Pre-reading and
post-reading techniques play an important role in developing this skill. Pre-reading strategies, such
as looking at the title, headings, and pictures, help readers prepare for what they will read (Tutorial
Letter 501, 2020:9). These strategies activate background knowledge and make it easier to
understand the text. Asking questions before reading also helps readers focus on important points.

Post-reading techniques help readers reflect on what they have read. Summarizing the main ideas,
discussing the text with others, or writing a response allows readers to analyze the content. These
strategies encourage deeper thinking and help readers connect the text to their own knowledge and
experiences. Through pre- and post-reading techniques, readers become more engaged and develop
better comprehension and critical thinking skills, which are important for academic success (Tutorial
Letter 501, 2020:9).

1.2 In your own words, explaining the difference between pre-reading and post reading strategies.

Pre-reading and post-reading strategies help readers understand a text better. Pre-reading happens
before reading. It prepares the reader for what they will read. Some pre-reading strategies include
looking at the title, pictures, and headings, as well as thinking about what the text might be about.
Readers can also ask questions about the topic to get ready for the main ideas.

Post-reading happens after reading. It helps readers check if they understood the text. Some post-
reading strategies include summarizing the main points, answering questions about the text, and
discussing it with others. Readers can also write their thoughts about the text to think more deeply.

The main difference is that pre-reading helps prepare the mind before reading, while post-reading
helps to understand and remember the information after reading. Both strategies are important for
good reading and learning skills.

2. Our ability to read and appreciate literature often comes from the approach to
reading in our homes, irrespective of our home language, because an appreciation for
reading is not limited by language or culture (TUT501 2020: 13)

2.1 In line with the perspective outlined in the statement above, as a Foundation Phase
FAL teacher, how will you apply reading strategies to learners who are not exposed to
