,Lifespan Development
• Happens across 3 developmental domains:
• Physical development – growth and changes in the body and brain, the
senses, motor skills, and health and wellness
• Cognitive development – learning, attention, memory, language, thinking,
reasoning, and creativity
• Psychosocial development – emotions, personality, and social relationship
,Lifespan Development
• Normative approach – study of development using norms, or avera
ages, when most children reach specific developmental milestones
• Children tend to develop at about the same rate… though there are
some small differences, on average, it’s all about the same
• Developmental milestones – approximate ages at which children
reach specific normative events
• Ex: crawling, walking, writing, dressing, naming colors, speaking in sentenc
and starting puberty

• Biological milestones, such as puberty, are usually experienced
around the same time for children across cultures
• Cultural aspects influence when a child experiences a social milesto
• Ex: Age of attending school, age eligible for a driving license
